Basic income calculator shows policy’s feasibility

One of the biggest objections to the universal basic income, especially from libertarians and conservatives, is that it is far too costly to implement. Among OECD countries, however, this is largely untrue.

The Economist recently unveiled a Basic Income Calculator that can illustrate how much each person could receive under a UBI by scrapping existing non-health related welfare. The United States would be able to achieve a $6,300 basic income.

To reach a $10,000 basic income, the U.S. government would need to use an additional seven percent of GDP. This would still keep the United States at welfare spending below many other OECD countries as a percentage of GDP.

Seven countries already spend more than $10,000 per person on non-health welfare and could decrease their spending under a UBI.

The 9th international Basic Income Week will be held from 19th until 25th of september 2016.

Basic income should empower everyone to have a good life in dignity, unconditionally. We invite activists around the world to contribute to our action week for Unconditional Basic Income (UBI).

The last Basic Income Week surpassed all our expectations. In September 2015, events were organized outside of Europe as part of the week for the first time, namely in Africa, Asia, New Zealand and North America.

The UBI-Week was initiated in 2008 in German-speaking countries. Activities spread significantly in Europe after the establishment of the new coalition Unconditional Basic Income Europe (UBIE) in 2014.http://ubie.org

What is Unconditional Basic Income?

It is a payment (by the state), which every person gets monthly lifelong. (Legal right)

Universal: Every person, irrespective of age, descent, place of residence, profession etc. will be entitled to receive this allocation.

Individual: Everyone has the right to UBI on an individual basis as this is the only way to ensure privacy and to prevent control over other individuals. UBI will be independent of marital status, cohabitation or household configuration, or of the income or property of other household or family members.

Unconditional: As a human right UBI shall not depend on any preconditions, whether an obligation to take paid employment, to be involved in community service, or to behave according to traditional gender roles. Nor will it be subject to income, savings or property limits.

High enough: The amount shall provide for a decent standard of living, which meets society’s social and cultural standards in the country concerned. It will prevent material poverty and provide the opportunity to participate in society and to live in dignity.

We emphasize that UBI shall not replace the compensatory welfare state but rather complete and transform it into an emancipatory welfare system.

 APFC Board approves private market allocations

MAY 25 – The Alaska Permanent Fund Board of Trustees reviewed the Fund’s recent investment performance for all of its portfolios, and approved private market allocations for the upcoming year at a regular board meeting on May 24 and 25 in Anchorage.

 Permanent Fund up 1.2 percent in third quarter

MAY 16 - The Permanent Fund was up 1.2 percent in the third quarter of fiscal year 2016, trailing the performance benchmark return of 2.3 percent. The recent positive performance was not able to fully overcome losses earlier in the year, producing a small loss of 0.9 percent for the year-to-date, compared to the performance benchmark of -0.3 percent. The fund ended March 31, 2016 with a value of $52.5 billion.

We the representatives of more than 500 delegates drawn from grassroots movements, community-based organizations, faith based organizations, women’s organizations, labour, student, youth, economic justice and human rights networks and other social movements; gathered at the SADC People’s Summit convened by the Southern Africa People’s Solidarity Network (SAPSN); People’s Dialogue and Rural Women’s Assembly (RWA) at the Big Five Lodge, Gaborone, Botswana, from the 15th-16thAugust 2015, under the theme ‘Reclaiming SADC for People’s Development – SADC Resources for SADC People’;
